Drowning west of Wichita claims the life of a 20-year-old man. 

WICHITA – The Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office and other emergency personnel responded to a private lake at 4900 W. 21st St.,Wednesday evening on the report of a drowing. 

The victim has been identified as 20-year-old Pillip Green of Wichita. He was transported to Via-Cristi St. Francis Regional Medical Center where he was pronounced dead shortly before midnight. 

Green and some friends had been swimming in the lake when the incident occurred. 

The Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office continue to investigate the incident along with the Sedgwick County Coroners Office.

Accident sends two to a local hospital. 

Two people were taken to a local hospital after a two vehicle accident west of Nickerson early Thursday morning. 

20-year-old Kristina R. Calcaterra of Chase, and 25-year-old Chris Mitchell of Haltom, Texas were both transported by Reno County E-M-S to Promise Regional Medical Center for treatment of their injuries. 

According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, Calcaterra was westboind on K-96 and crossed the center line striking an eastbound vehicle driven by 41-year-old Sharon Lorentzen-Stallings of Sterling, who was not injured. 

Calcaterra’s vehicle entered the south ditch and overturned, while Stallings vehicle ended up in the north ditch. 

The accident occurring just before 7 a-m on K-96 and K-14 highways, about 6 miles west of Nickerson.

Farmer’s Market in Downtown Hutchinson this Saturday. 

The Reno County Farmer’s Market is open for business this Saturday June 4th and all are invited to the Farmer’s Market Pavilion located at the corner of 2nd and Washington in Downtown Hutchinson. The Market is open from 7:30 a-m to 12:30 p-m. 

Once there, you can find a wide array of early produce, live plants for the garden, ethnic foods, delicious home baked goods and one of a kind crafts and gifts. 

Another reason to stop by on Saturday is a chance to enjoy the entertaining song stylings of Hutchinson’s own Simone du Garfunk recently returned from a well received tour that included engagements at Third Thursday and a backyard in Buhler. The talented Tammy and Bob Colladay along with Matt Parks will be performing from 9:00 to 11:00 a-m. 

Simone du Garfunk is sponsored by the Hutchinson/Reno Arts and Humanities Council in partnership with Downtown Hutchinson and the Reno County Farmer’s Market.

Chinese Government Lawyer visits U.S. Attorney’s Office in Topeka. 

TOPEKA – A lawyer with the Chinese government will be visiting the U.S. Attorney’s office in Topeka Friday, according to U-S Attorney Barry Grissom. 

Ada Wang is a research clerk at the Legal Affairs Office of the People’s Government of Beijing Municipality Administrative Legislative Research Center. 

We are very pleased to be hosting Ms. Wang,” said Grissom. “This is the first time I’ve spoken with a young attorney from China. It is interesting to compare notes about our legal experiences.” 

Wang is a 2007 graduate of the Beijing Normal University Law School. Her visit is sponsored by the International Academy of Trial Lawyers.

Buhler High School FACS Teacher Named the 2011.

Buhler High School Family and Consumer Science Teacher Marian Cordill has been named the Kansas Association for Career and Technical Education (K-ACTE) Outstanding Teacher in Community Service Award state winner for 2011. 

Cordill’s achievements will be recognized during a dinner banquet Aug. 1 at the K-ACTE Summer Conference in Overland Park. 

The Kansas Association for Career and Technical Education state awards program seeks to promote excellence in career and technical education by recognizing individuals who have made extraordinary contributions to the field, programs that exemplify the highest standards and organizations that have conducted activities to promote and expand career and technical education programs.
